The highly successful Mino Mshkiki-Maawnjidwing 2017 Conference (Good Medicine Conference) was January 24-26th at the Quattro Hotel & Conference Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The conference was sponsored by Anishinabek Nation (Union of Ontario Indians). Read more about the conference at this post

A great line up of speakers

I’ll tell you about two of them:

  • Presenter Carol Hopkins did an excellent job of presenting a balanced look on the important topic of Legalized Marijuana. With legalization being so new, this was a timely and serious topic. It will have impacts on Indigenous communities. It really got you thinking.
  • The Cedar Baths with background drumming by Mary Elliott were super popular! Here’s how Mary describes it “In the relaxing and meditating environment, participants have the opportunity to cleanse and heal by way of a cedar sponge bath and foot soak.” It was a real treat for those that were there.

Farm to Plate

An interesting thing about the Quattro Hotel is that they offer “Farm to Plate”. The hotel is linked with the Quattro Farms just outside the city that grows livestock in a sustainable way. At the farm they allow the animals to be free range or naturally farmed, and the vegetables and fruits are grown organically. No wonder the menu tasted so fresh and delicious! Thank you for caring for our environment.

Handouts from Karen’s presentations

I had the opportunity to do a key note presentation on Food Skills: Getting Healthy Food on the Table and also to do two Diabetes Workshops. Thank you to everyone who were at my presentations and stopped by my booth to say hi. After my presentations, people signed up to be sent my various handouts. I emailed these out to everyone who signed up. If yours didn’t come through or you weren’t at the conference, but you would like them, tell me by email. I’ll send you the link where you can download them.  karen@karengraham.ca
